I haven't tried to get it to work

The problem is that all the IMAP logic seems to be built into the Notes client, not the mail template per se. So if it doesn't work with the 8.5 mail template, there's not much you can do. You could however explore using IMAP Offline (instead of IMAP Online) and replicate your GMail directly to your server mail file.
